How to spot fake batana oil: the texture, colour & coffee-scent test

How to spot fake batana oil: the texture, colour & coffee-scent test

The quick answer

Real raw batana is deep amber to dark brown, semi-solid (almost buttery) at room temperature, and smells roasted, coffee-like and a little smoky. If yours is runny, pale, odourless or suspiciously cheap, be careful.

Why fakes are everywhere

Once batana blew up on social media, lots of jars appeared that are mostly cheaper oils with a bit of colour added. They look similar in photos, but feel and smell totally different in your hands.

The 4-check test

Do these with your jar of raw batana:

  • ✿Colour: deep amber to dark brown. Pale yellow or clear is a red flag.
  • ✿Texture: semi-solid at room temperature, melting as it warms in your palm.
  • ✿Scent: roasted, coffee-like and smoky. No smell at all, or a perfume smell, is suspicious.
  • ✿Label: one ingredient (Elaeis oleifera) and a clear origin such as Honduras.

Red flags

Walk away if you notice:

  • ✿Runny and see-through like cooking oil
  • ✿Added fragrance or a long ingredient list on a 'pure' jar
  • ✿No origin listed
  • ✿A price that seems too good to be true

Wait, my Auwell bottle looks lighter?

Yes, and that's on purpose ✿ This test is for raw batana, like our Herb & Aura jars, which are 100% unrefined. Auwell Cold Pressed Batana Oil is a blend: batana plus squalane, rosemary, peppermint and caprylic/capric triglyceride. That makes it lighter in colour, thinner and fresher-smelling, so it spreads easily for daily scalp massages.

Real talk 💬

If it's super cheap, crystal clear and smells like nothing, it's probably not the real deal. Trust your nose.

Your hair-type cheat sheet

Curly & coily 🌀

Go generous on lengths and ends, then seal in moisture after your leave-in.

Straight & fine 🪶

3–4 drops, scalp and mid-lengths only, and wash out well so roots stay bouncy.

Thick & wavy 🌊

Section first so the oil actually reaches the middle layers.

Colour-treated 🎨

Use it as a pre-wash mask to cushion lengths before shampoo.

Quick FAQs ✿

Why is my raw batana solid?+

Cool rooms make it firm up. Warm the jar in your hands and it melts right down.

Is a blend 'fake'?+

Nope, as long as it's honest about what's inside. Blends are made to be easier to spread.

What should the label say?+

Look for Elaeis oleifera (kernel) oil, the American oil palm.

Quick tips

  • ✿ Cold room? Raw batana firms up. Warm the jar in your hands.
  • ✿ Smell it before you buy if you can.
  • ✿ Keep it closed and away from direct sun.
